Garden Beds

Standard

One down, one to go!  In between rainy afternoons I put this garden bed together, just need to add some center supports.  I’ll have two – both will be 4’x8′ and 12″ deep.  I figured l should start with these and see how good my gardening skills are, lol.  After reading a ton of garden bed ideas on Pinterest, I decided to go with Douglas Fir, 2″x6″x8′ boards – 6 boards for each bed.  It freaked me out a bit reading on Pinterest how the pressure treated wood has chemicals and could leach into your soil so I went with untreated wood (HD says the pt wood is fine for garden beds).  It won’t last as long as PT wood but I figured I might be “done” with gardening by the time they rot, lol or I’ll change my mind and turn the garden area into a chicken coop, we’ll see.

Do You Know the Name?

Standard

IMG_1156Does anyone know the name of this bush?  It’s about 6′ tall and in my backyard.  It didn’t have any blooms last year but this year it’s gorgeous and it smell’s good, sweet.  I have no clue what it is.  😉

Craving Chocolate?

Standard

I found this recipe on Pinterest but changed it up a bit.  Every once in awhile you JUST need some chocolate!  The great thing about this is, just put it in an airtight container and it will be there when you’re ready – no fuss, no muss.  I think the key is the Angel Food Cake because the post said you could change up the chocolate cake mix for any flavor you want.  I’m going to try lemon cake mix and angel food next, oh and maybe a dollop of lemon curd!  Here you go  . . . .

Mug Cake – Add one box of Angel Food Cake Mix & one box of Chocolate Cake Mix (mine had choc chips) – mix together & store in airtight container

Mug Cake: 3 TBLS of cake mix/3 TBLS of water/½ Teaspoon of Vanilla

Mix everything together and cook in microwave for 1 minute!! When it comes out of the microwave I sprinkle the top with some mini choc chips and let it cool a bit. Top with some Whip Crème and you will be in heaven!  You are soooo welcome!  😉

When I bought my little farmhouse I thought this area next to the barn would be perfect for my veggie garden.  The sun is finally out so after work I decided to see how hard it would be to cut down the metal on the garden wall (the previous owners had this area built like fort knox to keep their killer dog in).  I got my gloves, my safety glasses and my wonderful new headphones.  These headphones are the best, thanks Diane & Brian!!!!  They’re noise reduction and have a build-in radio, LOVE!  I used a grinder (I borrowed from work) and a “cut-off” blade.  Once I got the hang of it, the grinder cut like butter, well kinda, lol.  My plan is to finish cutting the top half of the wall off to let more sunshine in and then possibly use “cattle panels”  (http://tinyurl.com/hc3mdqw) and some wood trim to finish it off.  Slowly but surely, lol. 😉

Strawberry Update & Question

Standard

I’m so tickled my strawberries have survived the below freezing temps & 4 snow/rain storms since I planted them!!  They even have flower buds, Grandma Weaver would be proud 😉  So for those of you that are strawberry grower experts . . . should I pick those flowers off????  It seems like I read somewhere that you should pick the first flowers off????

Olivia Tye Soap Co.

Standard

I’m so excited to introduce you to Jena & “Olivia Tye Soap, Co.”!!!!

Jena is my Texas Bestie’s daughter and my sweet friend.  When Amie & I were there (Texas) Jena told me about her blog that she is launching TODAY!!!!  Jena has been making Goat’s Milk Soap for a little while now and it is wonderful!!  I purchased a few bars (left pic) to try out & I honestly love the soap.  I’ve been using the Poppyseed one for my hand soap and my face wash for about a week now.  It’s super creamy – is that the right way to describe soap?   I can tell you that living in Colorado leads to very dry skin – I can’t wash my hands without immediately following up with hand lotion but not with this soap.  Her soap is handmade using goat’s milk from their very own goats and ALL natural ingredients (no chemicals, no perfumes).  You can totally tell the difference!  Jena’s blog will open your eyes to life on a farm.  I hope you visit her blog to see what’s going on at Triple J Ranch & check out her soap!!

Olivia Tye Soap, Co. options are: Frost’d Lavender, Honey’d Orange, Lime’d Coconut, Poppy’d Lemon, Spice’d Rum, and Squeak’d Clean!!!  I hope you give them a try – I promise you’re going to love them & they make great gifts!!  😉

I saw this idea on Pinterest and it worked out perfect.  I have several cinder blocks left over from the old back porch and a boat load of scrap wood.  The last time we saw temps above 50 degrees, I pulled out my little hand held circular saw and cut some wood!  Can’t wait for some fire pit nights. 😉
